Jim,
Obviously, I'm not Chris, but unless you do some fender mods, you
will not be able to stuff 17x8s on an '88 5k. I assume you're talking
about a 5kt or tq?
Offset is a big problem in the back- the rear fenderwells are pretty
tight even w/ 215/55R16s on a 16x7 ET45, which is pretty far inward.
That's even w/ Bilstein Sport shocks, which are pretty stiff.
You will have to flare your fenders front and rear, like the '91 200q.
Then you will have plenty of space and I'd recommend going with at least
ET35 so as to avoid the steering knuckle clearance issues in the front,
but I don't know if that would be enough once you go to an 8" wide wheel.
I was effectively running ET40 on my 16x7s and had literally a few
millimeters
of space. The inch of width would not help things, that's for sure.

chris,
saw your reply re the a4/a8 wheels. which exactly do you have (offset)? the
45mm a4 or the 38 a8 wheel? i assume both are 16x7?
i'm determined to stuff 17x8's under my 88 5k. and im tryin to do as much
pre-purchase info as possible. any other info much appreciated.
thanx,
-jim
