Steve,
You have all the symptoms of a bad fuel pump. Rising loudness of the pump,
pump cutting out, and being able to tap it to get it going again are all
classic signs of a bad fuel pump, btdt several times. They are not hard to
replace, just expensive, around $170 + online :-(
When replacing the pump, release pressure on the fuel system first, it is
around 70 psi. This pressure will make everything hard to get off, and will
cause fuel to spray all over the place if you are not carefull.
