new '85 4kq

Greetings all,
I'm new to the quattro list, but have been on the 20v list (I used to
own a '90 CQ) for a while...

I have just acquired an '85 4000s quattro to resume daily driver duties,
and have a few questions.

1. My A/C works, but only the center two vents blow cold air - the two
side vents blow hot air.  Any ideas what is wrong?

2. This is my first audi with Quattro-I, is there any maintenance
necessary to this first generation quattro system?  (maybe changing diff
fluid??)

3. This is my first Audi with the 10v motor, is it normal that it needs
to crank for a second or two longer than expected for it to start?

4. How difficult would it be to swap the manual-lock center diff for a
CV or TorSen unit?
