Plastic piece between Radiator & Engine

Pulled the radiator out of my '90 20V last night, and there's a big plastic divider between the radiator & the engine which is no longer my friend.  What purpose does this serve?  Can I omit its reinstallation and suffer no ill effects?  It looks as if it simply separates the two chambers, but I can't think of a practical or functional benefit.
