'87 4kcsq starter question and head gasket question

Hi All,
Will the starter from a vw quantum synchro automatic fit into my 87 4kcsq 
with standard? I have a chance to get a free starter if I pull it from the 
donor car, but do not want to pull it if it will not fit.

Also, I just completed replacing head/gasket on the 4kq. When I started the 
car she ran, but blew white smoke out the tailpipe. I let the car run about 
ten minutes, then noticed the cooling fan did not come on so I shut the car 
down. She was still puffing white smoke merrily out of the exhaust at 
shutdown.

I was told that this was normal, as there was probably water in the exhaust 
system from when the head gasket blew. Is this correct, and if so, how long 
can I expect to see white smoke?

Of course after I got the car started that one time the starter went 
south..........
