Hi all,

Saturday, we changed the tired (and probably original) front struts on my
261k km '87 80. The new inserts are OE, though their part number suggests
that they've been revised. We also changed the strut bearings for blue UrQ
items, which fit fine as advised by several listers.
The result (driving some 200 km yesterday) is incredible, the car feels
totally different. I hadn't driven a low-mileage unmodified type 89 before,
and even without changing the suspension bushings, the car feels totally
tight and collected. Steering effort (non-assisted steering setup) has been
greatly reduced, and even with worn tyres I haven't been able to find the
limits while cornering hard.

I can't say that it's been easy (even though an experienced friend did most
of the work in his professionally-equipped workshop), as most components
were quite hard to separate, notably the caps that hold the struts in
place- which needed quite a bit of heat before they let go.

If you feel that your car's handling isn't as crisp as it used to be,
change the struts. Even a tired old car feels great after that.
