Facom Tools

The Facom tool, DM10A, is a tool used to remove the old valve seals from the
head while it is still attached to the block.

In an earlier post I inquired about anyone who had fabricated their own tools to
do this job. The special tools needed would be a spring compressor, tool to
remove old valve seal, method of getting a new one on, and of course, some way
to keep the valve from dropping into the cylinder.

The illustration in the Bentley shows a spring compressor rig that looked as if
it could be fabricated without too much trouble. The pliers to remove the old
seals has funny looking ends and would probably have to be purchased. I was
thinking that any heat applied to the end of a set of jury rigged pliers would
certainly take the temper out of the pliers and render them useless. I did get
a hose to apply the pressure to the cylinder. It's made by Lysle here in the
States.

Phil Payne mentioned in his post that a 1/4" socket is what he uses to slide the
new seal on, "... with lots of oil."

The search for these tools is my personal response to the VW places who will not
sell these tools to the general public. ( I didn't have my General's uniform
on)

I have taken photos the from Facom site to the local parts places to see if they
have seen anything similar, but no luck yet. I would have thought that K-D or
Lysle would have something on the market.

There is another tool, again recommended by Phil Payne, which is the Hazet
791-8. Instead of using the long bar and lever, this tool threads onto the stud
and is far more cumbersome than the before mentioned tool.

According to Hazet, their tools are being handled by the Cornwell tool trucks.
A phone call to the local Cornwell rep didn't produce either the tool or any
knowledge of anything Hazet. He did say he would inquire at his distributor.

Today I will make inquiries at Raleigh and Charolette,
North Carolina. By the way things are currently going, the purchase looks like
it's headed for Techtonics out in Oregon. Which was brought to my attention by
another lister.

I'll be notifying the list when this whole thing settles.

Thankyou for your interest,

Donald
