if it's liek the ones I am familiar with it is very simple.  there is a
voltage regulator to runt he coolant temp and fuel gauges, it produces
10v so these two gauges don't fluctuate with electricla load.

the 10v flows through a coil in a magnetic field attached to the needle
(D'Arsonval movement?), thru the wiring, and then thru the "sender",
which is a variale resistance type device and is grounded, which is
where the current winds up.  needle defelection varies proportionatley
with sender resistance.
