My '00 wagon is a lot louder than my '98 sedan (both 1.8T).  I think VW
went to a louder muffler on the newer cars.  I've heard a lot of noise
complaints on newer 1.8Ts.

The automatic will probably bring you more in resale than the stick.  It
almost always does.  I sold my Mazda Miata a few years ago.  When I
looked up the average used car price to try to find out what to ask for
it, the book said SUBTRACT $500 for automatic transmission!  I guess
most people that want a car like the Miata want the stick!  Actually,
come to think of it, I've never seen a Miata with an automatic!
