After struggling with removing the oil filter on my new-to-me S6 avant, I
did some investigation at the local Pep Boys.

I found a tool that fits over the end of the oil filter, looks like a cap
for the filter, and takes a 3/8" ratchet. Slip this on, slip your ratchet
wrench into the end, and loosen at your leisure. Don't have enough room, use
a ratchet extension. Much easier than trying to fit the traditional band
filter wrench into tight spaces, burning and skinning body parts in the
process :)

I bought one for my S6 and another for my A6. Sizes A and C, IIRC, and they
were about $3 or $4 each.

I also bought a rubber thingie that fits over the end of the filter, allows
you to hand loosen the thing without spilling oil down your arm...
