Depends on whether you're looking for a 4000 in front-drive form or a
quattro. If the former, auto or manual trans (quattro was only offered
with a manual on the 4000). In the US, 4000 quattros came with the
115hp 5-cylinder while 4000 FWD cars are mostly 4-cylinder with varying
horsepower ratings depending on the model year (85-87 are all 102hp).
Auto trans 4000s are anemic but the manual 4000, both front drive and
quattro are sprightly.
The 4000 series are generally very reliable cars (partially due to their
simplicity), with only minor trouble areas (a few things come to mind:
auto trans, headlight switch, power window switches, leaky/weak A/C system,
and some sundry minor and easily correctable electrical contact problems).
The drivetrain is pretty much bullet proof. Of course, much of the
condition of a car depends on its owner's use (abuse?), upkeep and
maintenance. Cars of that vintage are going to require replacement of
standard wearable parts, etc.
A thorough inspection by an Audi-knowlegeable mechanic is always a
good idea.
