Solid lifters are as you describe. Hydraulic lifters are exactly the
same, but they are filled with engine oil and expand to fill in the
space that the shims would if they were solid. I imagine they have
little springs in them that keep them extended, and the oil filling
functions to dampen the compression.
A rocker arm setup is different. Hydraulic lifters go in the same
place, in the same manner, as solid lifters.
