My "feelings" are that items relatively easy to access, such as a front seal, 
should not be disturbed. A rear main seal which is a major disassembly to 
access should, on the other hand, be renewed.
One reason is the small chance of introducing a scratch on the crank shaft, 
if improperly executed, and then having a non-curable sealing problem.
Summation-If your looking at it and it would take days labor to do the same 
again, renew it. If it is accessible in an hour or two, leave well enough 
alone.
