Mobil 1 in transaxel

Not too long ago, there was a thread regarding the use of (and why not to 
use)  M 1 in Audi transaxels, M 1 = GL 5, Audi specifies GL 4.   80K miles 
ago, I put M 1 in my 2C and had no problems - until I read the thread.  Then 
a small whine occurred, which got louder.  And LOUDER.  The noise was loud 
enough to make me start looking for a transaxel.  I check the fluid level at 
each oil change and just to eliminate that possibility, I double checked and 
the level was OK.  Last night I tried one last thing before I resigned myself 
to a TA change.  I drained out the M1 and installed Redline MT 90.  Today the 
noise is almost gone.  The M1 that I drained out also smelled much stronger 
than new M 1.  I was under the impression that GL 5 is the same as GL 4 with 
additional sulfur. I don't know if M 1 has a limited life and it just "wore 
out".  Are there any Tribologists out there who can shed some light on this?
