Mobil 1 in transaxel

Not too long ago, there was a thread regarding the use of (and why not to
use) M 1 in Audi transaxels, M 1 = GL 5, Audi specifies GL 4. 80K miles
ago, I put M 1 in my 2C and had no problems - until I read the thread. Then
a small whine occurred, which got louder. And LOUDER. The noise was loud
enough to make me start looking for a transaxel. I check the fluid level at
each oil change and just to eliminate that possibility, I double checked and
the level was OK. Last night I tried one last thing before I resigned myself
to a TA change. I drained out the M1 and installed Redline MT 90. Today the
noise is almost gone. The M1 that I drained out also smelled much stronger
than new M 1. I was under the impression that GL 5 is the same as GL 4 with
additional sulfur. I don't know if M 1 has a limited life and it just "wore
out". Are there any Tribologists out there who can shed some light on this?
