What color was the Mobil 1 GL5 when you drained it?  An
acquaintance of mine had put a GL5 synthetic (Redline, I believe)
in his Triumph, which is also spec'd for GL4.  When he drained
it, the oil came out looking like a stream of pure gold, from all
the bronze dissolved in it.

I made the same mistake with my own Triumph.  Fortunately, the
oil was only in the differential for a month or so, and the car
sat still the whole time.  When I drained it to put in GL4, the
month-old oil had about a million tiny specs of gold dissolved in
it.

So, if the oil from your transaxle was resonably clean, and
didn't have a gold color, you're probably all right.
