My early type 81 2 door (Purchased in mid January of 1980) had the 1.7 litre
engine and a 4 speed. No 5 speed trans in CA for the 1980 MY. The Bentley is
unclear, showing a slightly more powerful 1.6 on page 2 in the engine list,
but only the 1.7 on page 4 where the VIN decoder is. I later installed the
4E 5 speed because a bearing was on its way out, a problem through the VW
Fox production, BTW. It was irritating to find the 4th gear of the 5 speed
was higher than the 4th gear of the 4 speed. It was unusual for me to be
able to drive in 5th gear. BTW, at 350K + the car has gone to the place
where rustbuckets go, but the trans is on a rack outside in the shed, and
can be purchased by anyone waving a bit of cash in my face. John
