oil pressure test with mechanical gauge: ?

You are correct, it's basically matching up the fitting.  Last time I
measured oil pressure was on a VW Jetta (notorious clusters), I borrowed
a friends el-cheapo JC Whitney gauge kit, and I was surprised to find it
came with the correct adapter,  all you have to do is remove the oil
pressure switch and match up the treads with the adapter (sometimes
there's more than one, use the one with easiest access) and screw in the
gauge.
