I also got the same message and spoke to a friend at AT&T. He tells me that
Northpoint is bankrupt and has been operating its network without
maintenance and without any feasible potential for profit at any foreseeable
date in the future. Investors were willing to fund in the hope that one day
it would be profitable.
So long story is that, the shut down is necessary to stop the bleeding. At
some point the services will be repriced either as part of an overall AT&T
service (high cost) or resinstated (very high price). I asked how others
have done it. The answer is that nobody is making money from DSL and unless
investors see a potential for a return, they will all be shut down or
acquired except for those who are willing to pay at about 50% of the cost of
a T1 per connection.
Ouch Ouch !!
