free type 44 parts

For anyone in the Northern Virginia area - our beloved '87 5TQ (red/blk) is
going to the junkyard on April 6. If anyone needs relatively small parts,
you're welcome to come by and remove them from the car. The insurance
company bought the car for salvage, so I can't totally dismember it, but
small parts are fair game. E-mail me for more details.

that's a good excuse to get some stainless on those fittings so they are

Just snapped some digital pics of the progress thus far, in them you can see

The KBB site is WAY OFF most of the time. Just thank the Audi gods that
nobody uses KBB numbers for sales tax or excise tax.
Edmunds online comes closest to the full NADA and Galves books (ones that
come out every week.) Edmunds will even print out a nice window sticker
listing the engine, options etc. Here are the Edmunds numbers for the
same 1993 with the same mileage etc.:
Trade-in $11,802
Private Party $12,885
Dealer Retail $14,689
Just for the heck of it I checked my 1990 V8Q on KBB:
Trade-In Value $7,025
Retail Value $11,085
Wow, not bad, figuring I paid $15K for the car 6 years ago. First $10K
takes it, as I know where I can immediatly go buy a 5 spd. for 5
Franklins more.
On Edmunds my car came up with (even adds for the pearl paint):
Trade-in $5,991
Private Party $6,773
Dealer Retail $8,173
Any lister can tell you which are the real world numbers here, and which
site is more likely sponsored heavily by dealers.

I just wanted to make sure if it was possible to reatin the A/C while
doing a turbo conversion to a 4ksq. Also is it possible to reatin the
existing radiator for the 4kq or would I have to buy a new radiator from a
5ktq.

Dan and I took a spin in a sube WRX today. 1.5 miles on the
odometer. Salesman to dan on the phone: "Yes, I find these test
drives quite a bit of fun." Dan(after hanging up):"I like this
salesman."
We pull into the parking lot after what would be described as a
normal drive, and sitting in the lot, the car starts to smoke. "Heh,
you think we worked the turbo a little?" says the saleman.
Apparently, all Subes come from the factory with catalytic converters
that need to "burn off" a coating or something; the WRX has no less
than THREE converters(and I thought I had a bunch; 2's fine, three's
a crowd, if you ask me.) The result was a rather impressive amount
of smoke after this WRX's maiden voyage....

1 - Yes you can if you want to re-plum the lines. No room for the condensor
where it sits in the 4kq.
2 - Yes you can, and, no, you couldn't use it if you did.

Subject: Anyone with a Bentley for 1989-1991 Audi 200...
Hi!
I am looking for a copy of the pages describing the removal of the
dashboard for the 1989-1991 Audi 200, the one with the rounded facia. I
have a Haynes manual which describes removal of the old dashboard, not
the new one. I'd really appreciate it if anyone with this Bentley manual
could send me some scans of the pages.
I've stripped the bottom part of the dashboard and removed the centre
console, but looking under the dashboard just shows up alot of mounts
that I'm not keen on just undoing. :)
Thanks. :)

Hi guys,
humm... no offense here, but if I ever have to consider buying one of those
"Homologation Specials", I would consider e30 M3 instead of MB's 190E
2.3-16v anytime. Parts and maintenance wise, I think the e30 M3 would a bit
cheaper than MB; not to mention performance parts are readily available.
Performance and handling wise, I don't think I need to say more (the
winningest touring car title says it all) : P
Now back to the 535i.... from what I learned on my e30, I think you might
want to check the front lower control arms and their bushings, flex disk
(not guibo), engine will probably need valves adjustment (in your case, ask
about the last timing belt and tensioner replacement), the shifter and the
linkage bushings probably need to rebuild, and rubber in-take boot need to
check for crack....... Lastly, if you know how to take care and fix your
Audi well (especially if you owned a type 44 before), the 535i should not be
a problem for you.

Go here http://www.mercedesshop.com/main.htm to the shop forum and find the
high performance/hot rod category. You should be able to find what you need
or put a question out there and get the information you require.
For my two cents I'd take the benz with the cosworth motor and a five speed
anyday over a bimmer. The benz was limited production and that motor is
wonderful. All the parts are available to convert it to a euro spec motor
with LOTS more power. If the car is completely stock (I've seen a lot of
these for sale after the boy racer honda civic set have had their way with
them...ugh) and it has a clean bill of health AND a documented service
history go for it. I think I'd prefer to find a 86 or 87 (think they made a
87) model; think I read they are a bit more preferable. Factory probably
fixed a few things and tweaked it here and there.
Regards,
Carl
ps: I'd never buy a bimmer with more than 90k on the clock unless the motor
had been rebuilt.

Hello Friends,
Sorry for lack of Audi content. I know how some people get upset
over this but I know I can always count on all of you for the best advice,
even when it comes to other cars that don't compare to our beloved Audis! I
am looking to purchase one of the two cars listed in the subject line. One
of them is a 1984 Mercedes 190E 2.3 16 and the other is a 1988 BMW 535is.
Both cars are 5 speed with about 150,000mi average between the two. I am an
Audi guy and thought I should at least try one of the older competitor's
cars. I ran a carfax on both and they check out clean as a whistle. I am
currently driving (and always will) a 1990 Audi Coupe quattro 20V.
What should I look for in these cars? Both are selling for around
$4000. Is there anything special I should know before I buy one of them?
ISV on the mercedes... Rear Subframe on the BMW.. These are couple things I
know. Is that 4 cylinder mercedes engine any good?? Any help is
appreciated.

i've owned a '88 190 2.3-16. beautiful build (better than audis of the same
vintage), but otherwise disappointing. handling was not a strong point with
a lot of early understeer, and then late understeer. gearbox (getrag
5-speed) was very difficult to finese, and the engine had a lot of throttle
snatch which defied a number of attempts to remove. however, the engine is
nice (smooth and powerful), but watch for problems with the exhaust
manifold. rear subframe bushes also give problems on high mileage cars, and
are expensive to fix. ditto a/c compressors, and radiator fan switches.
the good news was that i bought for about $8.5k usd, and sold for $8k usd 18
months later.
also, the '84 would be the 1st year or so of production, so i'm not sure
that that would be a good idea...
i sold the car with few regrets. still looking for a pristine '88-89 m3...

Wow, thats an interesting opinon. I don't have any technical
DETAILS, but I can share with you my only experience with BMW
which is as follows:
(i'll try to fit some Audi content in here somewhere)
I knew a 17 yr old girl who got an 88 535i with 130k on it, in good
shape. (at first I didnt like it, but it was black on black, so it looks
pretty badass) She's treated that car like crap for almost 4 years...
oil changes about every 8000 miles or so, (one time it was
approaching 10,000 so I chewed her out and changed it for her)...
Letting the boyfriends "go driving" (which usually resulted in the car
being covered in mud and "alien crop circles" appearing in the
neighboring fields) etc...
I sometimes wondered if she realized the hood "opens", and often
wondered if I would see the car again before it's lifespan gave way
to abuse. She occasionally came to me with minor problems, (like
hooking up the new CD player) and now my respect for that car is
immense.
I assisted her by replacing a brake bomb that was failing once, and
told her she had to have her control arms replaced soon. (which
she did about 25k later, all the shaking from that and the warped
rotors she also replaced must have been great for the rest of the
car teehee)... A few months ago I demanded she take it in for a
transmission fluid change and while it was in, the fan clutch was
replaced at Kuni BMW because they said there was a recall on it
or something. (thats what she said anyway)
But with the exception of these minor replacements that were long
overdue, (she has not even had any engine work done with the
exception of a Firestone "tune-up" two years ago, and an o2
sensor when it failed emissions last summer) the car now has over
250k on it and is still running strong (she drove it from Portland to
Vancouver BC last weekend -- she's 20 now and likes to go drinkin)
The car boasts almost all the same equipment that was on it
nearly 130k ago when she bought it, and keep in mind she got it
with 130k already on the clock... I saw her recently and took it for a
spin, and BTW it's still got a ton of pep and driving it is a dream..
It's not even leaking oil!!! (though the suspension does seem a little
loose again).. Truly an amazing automobile, and based on her
experience, I have recently considered finding an e28 myself.
I've been feeling the urge to use parentheses a lot (over the past
couple of weeks) (for some reason)
-Carl (from one to another)
PS Audis are so cool!

That's an excellent question and one I would love to
answer. But as usual I must reply with another
question: How can I tell?
They do not look bent or anything out of the ordinary,
(keep in mind I had never seen them until AFTER the
incident) however I can see some scratches up the
smaller post that goes inside of the bigger one, (what
is that called? a piston or something??) so it is
clear they were both put to use and pushed in 3 or
more inches on impact and then popped back out. Are
these a one-time deal that need to be replaced? Looks
like a simple enough bolt-on replacement at first
glance though I hadn't even considered them before,
let alone priced them. (I just ran outside in the rain
to peek at them on my lunch break)
When I had the estimate done, the guy seemed to think
there are "some kind of shock absorbers that will need
to be replaced" but at that point I had indicated I
would be using my insurance, so whether he was 'yankin
my chain' or not is unclear, especially since he
looked at the car (bumper-on) for a total of 10
minutes.
The impact was straight dead center on the back of an
80's buick on a straight section of road, so as stated
before, the damage was centered in the front and was
symmetrical to the left and right side of the car.
I would be tempted to say, considering the possibility
that these may have been designed to withstand the
occasional smack on the ass of the vehicle who wont
yield the fast lane, that they look fine... However,
since I had never even thought about them before I am
slightly concerned as to whether they are something I
should be thinking about.
I dont know why I feel the need to be so verbose, I'm
sure I could have gotten this point across in a single
paragraph :P Sorry!

the 5ktq radiator just won't fit. you can use the 4kq radiator no problem
but you have to tilt it at an angle to use the 5kt AC compressor. I'm
working on making AC fit in my car now (florida bound for the summer.. it
gets HOT). I'm dumping the nippendenso stock 5kt compressor and going with
a custom Sanden unit. I realized the thing to do is to make a custom
bracket that will take up less room than the stock compressor. I am going
to try to make this fit with a larger than stock custom radiator as well.
To do this you must move the Alternator to the turbo side of the engine.. as
if there wasn't enough over there already.. My plan is to use a Sanden SD5
series compressor as the fittings are on the top of the unit and it is a
fairly compact compressor in a high efficiency scroll type design.
