That might have something to do with the fact that the 5-series were more 
expensive when new than the 4k. Better to compare an E30 3-series and a 4k, 
and I think that one comes out in favour of the 4k...

Anyway, both cars have their merits- to choose one over the other is a 
personal choice, based on objective as well as subjective criteria but 
weighed against your personal preferences and requirements. This being an 
Audi enthusiasts' list, I guess most people would go for an Audi, however 
good the BMW might be. I've driven some BMWs, and prefer Audis.
