Hello, there is one major problem I forsee in your project..though the 2.3 is
marginally larger, it has much higher compression than any of the 2.2's -it
is great for the NA applications, but in the turbo applications can mean
serous detonation problems, especially with the lack of knock sensing
ingnition in your car. Though you have somewhat addressed the problem with a
thicker head gasket, I am not aware on any, and stacking 2 gaskets is a major
no-no for longevity.

You will want to keep your 4kq head with whatever bottom end you use, that
way all the factory turbo manifolds and such will be a direct fit. I would
recommend using an MC bottom end since you are going to be swapping anyway,
though granted what you have in there right now with 8.5:1 would work well
too. The benefit of the MC block would be in the provisions for oil and
water to the turbo already built in, and the oil squirters in the block.

With the lower compression, you will find that your CIS and ignition system
will be sufficient to the 6-8 lb boost range. At higher compression levels
the lack of ks ingnition will not offer you any saftey from detonation.

In the world on turbo charging, esp. older cars like these, you will find
that properly matched compression ratios and boost make power, not .1l bigger
displacement and knock inducing high-compression. The HP advantage to having
.1l would quickly be made up for by 1or 2 lbs of boost.

<< Hi all!

I've followed the callaway turbo kit thread since the very beginning, and I
am seriously planning to do this when I swap my car's 2.2l engine for a
2.3l. It seems that it is the easier way to go for higher HP without the big
bucks...I will however use a thicker head gasket in order to lower the CR a
little, say 9:1, as 10:1 could be a little too much!

 My questions are:
-What Intake manifold should I use for this conversion? As I suppose the
stock 2.3 IM won't work with the turbo piping...
-Will the 5ktd downpipe bolt on directly between the 5ktd EM and my stock
exhaust system? And is the 5ktd EM a true bolt-on for the 2.2l engine of a
 4kq?
-Will it work correctly with my CIS and Ignition system that doesn't have
any Knock-sensing, and what about the vacuum input to the ignition
 distributor? >>
