I wouldn't *blame* the spring, but in general you always want to get the
car running smooth and strong in stock form before adding anything.

Otherwise, you add too many variables and diagnosing the problems becomes
extremely difficult.

It might have something to do with the regulator, or the spring, or
something else entirely.  Or maybe the spring is magnifying some *other*
problem, etc, etc, etc.  It's hard to know where to start unless you start
with a stock motor.
