To make the fixing story very short: I pulled the electrical pigtail at the
throttle switch and examined the three connectors, and saw two of them
shiny and one very black. I cleaned up the blackened one and plugged the
electricals back in and stalling problem was GONE! Talk about being one
happy Audi owner.........
Details: My 87 5ktq began stalling in mid-April, when I pushed in the
clutch to change gears. I would be slowing down before driving into a sharp
corner and when I changed gears the engine RPM's would drop straight down
past 800-900 and just fall off to zero. Same thing would happen when I came
up to a stop sign and pushed in the clutch, or when I jumped off the
turnpike and rolled up to the toll booth. Mostly happened when I was
running the air conditioner.
I learned to turn off the air conditioner as I approached those situations,
and usually that solved the problem. Then, this week the car stalled a few
times even with the air conditioner off. Man, this was serious. Required
right foot to operate both the brake and the accelerator at the same time,
to keep the engine running.
The throttle switch wasn't getting all the signals from the control box,
because of that one poor connection.
And I'll bet there are a lot of type 44's running around out there with the
same condition. Recently the list has had a rash of "stalling" posts, and
they appeared about the time warm weather started. The extra load of the
air conditioners might have precipitated some of those posts, when the
throttle switch wasn't able to bump up the RPM's to compensate.
So, go check those connections. Doyt Echelberger
