Before procedingand possibly cracking the reservoir, go to the boneyard and 
get a replacement.  Pull and plug your hoses.  Use a can to catch the 
drippings from the reservoir.  Pitch the old reservoir, install the new, 
reattach the hoses, and flush your PS system.

ATF is the proper fluid to use.
