Andrew,
You obviously don't recall the Brabham (I think)
Formula One car with the three-foot diameter fan on
the back end, sucking air from underneath the car.
The car dropped down at least a couple of inches
when the engine was revved in the pits.
Brabham, or whomever it was said the fan was there
to "cool the engine." Autoweek likened that to
saying the engine is on the car to keep the battery
charged.
