I think there's a misunderstanding... I'm not planning on removing the heat 
deflector shield, I think this is the 'exhaust manifold shroud' that Huw 
Powell refers to on his site(?)  I was wondering whether I should remove the 
plastic piece on the airbox and run straight into it, or span the gap between 
the smaller opening and the deflector shield.  If I understand the mechanism 
correctly, (with a short piece spanning the gap) the air will enter the shroud 
with the flap open, when it is closed, it will stop the airflow, which will 
divert the entire volume of air into the airflow metering box.  It seems like 
this shouldn't interfere with the preheated airflow from the exhaust manifold, 
but obviosly I don't completely grasp the entire system...
