I think so, too.

So far this sound reasonable and we are talking aobut the same thing. 
The piece of sheet metal that is rusted off usually.  The hose that used
to go from it to the appropriate airbox entry is usually in tatters if
not long gone.

Now all of a sudden I have no clue what you mean at all.

Still not getting you.  The flap controls *where* the air comes from -
heated off the EM when cold (<40 deg F?) or regular ambient air above
that, by "selecting" which inlet hole is used.
