Sorry to hear about the niece. Regarding the heat output with the heater
valve closed: in my wife's 4kq, I could manually close the valve and no
heat would come out for awhile, but eventually it would start heating
again. A replacement for the 14-year-old valve provided normal operation
for the last year or so. I think a new plastic one was around $20.
