Okay, so today I removed the power steering pump and discovered a few
things. So if I catch you before you go that far I hope this helps. There
are two ways to do this, The best and easiest way in my opinion is this:
Leave the reservoir in place and after removal of the pump and lines, plumb
the line that is left open (should be on the rack) back into the reservoir.
After this is done the rack and the reservoir should be a complete system
with no open lines. Before you refill the reservoir remove the cap and place
a rag over top of it, then run the steering wheel lock to lock at least a
dozen times. This should push all of the extra fluid into the reservoir (you
will have extra because your system is smaller now) then fil or drain the
reservoir to the appropriate level. If you decide to remove the res. like I
did then you will have to drain most of the fluid out using the "lock to
lock" method and then find a way to tie the lines into each other so that the
rack is a system all it's own. Make sure you run the wheel until it is not
pushing any more fluid out of the lines before you tie the lines together
other wise the next weakest point will give and that is usually the steering
shaft seal which will make a big mess in the car.
