wastegate dumping. . . been there doing that

Currently, the wastegate on my CGT turbo is dumping to the atmosphere. I cut
off the factory pipe and welded over the intersection of the two.
Interestingly for those putting 10V turbo engines into 4ks this will get you
around the tie rod.
when the wastegate cracks open under boost it makes a loud SHHHHHHH sound as
exhaust pushes through the opening, when you shift the wastegate is closed so
no cool sound.
The cool sound comes from the bypass valve, unfortunately the plastic Audi
valves are not much on noise which is why I used an Eagle Talon valve. Now I
get the loud PSHHHHH between shifts under boost. For a lot of sound I would
get a Greddy type S valve which has an adjustable sound control.
As far as I can tell there is no detrimental effect from dumping the
wastegate, It shouldn't affect the cats at all and there is more than enough
exhaust running through the tiny O2 sensor housing under boost. The
wastegate tube bypasses the O2 sensor anyway so this is not a concern.
Personally I like having the WG dumped, I think it sounds pretty cool under
boost and it did save me from having to get one of those special bent
tie-rods.
Good luck to those interested,
Matt Kramer
