wastegate dumping. . . been there doing that

if you dump the wastegate to atmosphere aren't you letting your exhaust
gases out under your hood? I only ask because 1. the heat might hurt
something and 2. the poisonous gases kinda need to be routed to behind
(or to the side of) the car usually.
