T-belt change questions and advice needed

Fellow listers,
A french friend's newly acquired 87 CGT (50.000 miles!) is due for the
T-belt, WP, thermostat change and many more things this week-end and I'll do
it...nice as the first time I ever tried doing this on my former 84 CGT I
was stuck because of the vibration damper pulley bolt :)
Now with the experience from the list I think I'm pretty ready for it except
that I couldn't buy the VW 2084 :( The Belgian VW/AUDI importer simply told
me that this tool wasn't for sale...weird as I know that some of you on the
other side of the pond and even in GB have bought it at the dealer'$...
Oh well, as I don't have time to travel to GB this week to buy one, nor
enough time to mail order one, I'll do the tranny bolt trick or another
trick that I've read on the list about holding the crank with the car in
gear and the brake pedal fully depressed...
Which one do you guys think will work best? Are there chances that the
pressure plate will not stand the torque of the unbolting procedure and let
the clutch slip? Could one of you remind me the size of the tranny bolt used
for the trick?
Any advice other than triple-check everything before re-assembly???
Thanks a bunch,
Mihnea
