I just fixed a problem similar to this yesterday.
Would floor the gas and hold down just get very erratic idle. Would
fluctuate between 500 and 2000rpm while popping and backfiring into intake
boot. I had to keep it floored with auto trans in drive just to stumble and
buck the car(86 5kt) up the driveway.
I knew the mixture was lean, but all hoses and boots were in good shape.
I couldn't check the fuel pressures because audi uses a different fuel
fitting setup than VW, my CIS pressure tester wouldn't fit.
I just figured the control pressure was too high, forcing the flow plate
down too low.
Well, I recalibrated the regulator(another story) to a lower pressure and
everything is fine. Starts/runs/idles perfect.
Only thing bugging me is how the pressure got screwed up in the first place.
