10V head mod qustion [turbo rebuild]

ya, good to see you getting into this audi stuff. i'm back sorta...I'm
still working on getting back to driving an Audi, so until then, I feel a
little out of the game....

anyway, I had someone at Bramall hunt around for a new shaft. I'm not 100%
sure that it was new or just polished, but it was very clean...looked like
it hadn't been used. [normally very noticeable esp. on the exhaust side
blades]. I think I paid $150 canadian, which is I think under $100. I know
it was a lot, but I was stuck w/ an almost rebuilt turbo and I really
should've tightened it down less. The torque listed was probably for a
different turbo or the later design w/ the thicker shaft. Lesson learned...

about the balancing...I called around and only a few places wanted to deal
w/ it, although Bramall, turbo city, and others offer this. In all of the
cases, I'd have to send the turbo out for at least a week....I talked to a
pretty trusted mechanic who mostly works on American cars. He was part of a
racing team and used to build the engines in his garage. Anyway, he said he
had rebuilt quite a few turbos, but never balanced them. He said it
wouldn't be 100% perfect, but finding people to do it would be too
expensive and time-consuming. He said he never heard of a problem w/ the
turbos. I figured since the turbine was new, and I just wanted to get on
the raod, I took his word and just bolted it on. It worked fine for about
10k miles, and probably still is fine. But I think if I ever get my audi
back together, I'll have it balanced a turbo shop like Bramall, cuz I want
someone who knows turbos to do it, and that way I know I can't fault the
turbo for problems like oil leakage or whatever. So, I think you'll be the
best judge of rebalancing. If you think it's too expensive, etc. you can go
without doing it, you'll be fine...but, if you have the time and extra
cash, no reason not to.
