Could be! Mercedes Benz took it up the wazoo in the mid 1980's when they
developed the trap oxidizer for the 6-cylinder Turbo Diesel for 1986-87.
The oxidizer was BEFORE the Turbo, so when pieces of ceramic broke off,
which frequently happened, the turbo failed. $3000 was the warranty claim
cost, regardless of cars mileage! Happened three times on my 87 Turbo
Diesel, each covered by warranty. Finally, MB developed a new exhaust
system, W/O trap, which fixed the turbo problem and passed emmission
standards, too. Warranty covered that, too. Car then ran very well for a
turbo Diesel.
Rest of the car was a POS, however.
