Hello Andrew...........In June, 1989, a one year old 12,000 mile used 1988
Audi 5ktq averaged $23,100. The used 1988 model 90 was about $18,000 and
the used 1988 Honda Accord ranged from $10,000 to $14,000 depending on what
package was on the car. Source is a 1989 June NADA Central Edition official
used car guide I still have in a drawer.
Long ago the Japanese marketing gurus used loss-leader prices to establish
a foothold in the new US market. As far back as the 70's they were selling
EXCELLENT cars (made in Japan) at a considerable loss, for less than the
price of a VW Rabbit. And people were waiting months on a list to get them.
One salesman I knew had 30 people pre-sold on Accords and Civics, all
waiting for cars. And they would take any color and any pack of accessories
the dealer wanted to bolt on to the vehicle. And during most of it, Audi
was offering the model 100 at a rather high price, and the Fox a little lower.
Personally, I stayed with the German cars. I liked the way they drove, and
the way they looked. Still do.
