My girlfriend's bucking problem

Quite often, the problem is an ignition wire. The defective wire will most
often fail to deliver the spark when engine is under load. When idling, wire
works ok. The bucking is caused by one or more cylinders dropping out, then
coming back on.
I havent figured out why that happens. I think it has to do with
conductivity changes at the spark plug gap. Although one would think that a
richer compressed air/fuel mixture would conduct more than leaner air/fuel
mixture. Maybe Phil has the theory on why this happens.
At any rate, I've had this happen about 3 times on my cars. The first time
on my 85 4000s . . 10 days after I bought it new! One ignition wire wouldnt
fire right under load. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it would'nt.
If the wires are more than 5 years old, I would consider changing the
distributor cap, rotor, and ignition wires just on general principles.
While you are playing there . . disassemble the grounds in the back of the
engine, clean them, then reassemble. Bad grounds do strange things also.
