The trannies are 4HP22, I think, and are NOT rebuilt by anyone but ZF.  At
least not by anyone with an ounce of sense.  I had to replace a trans in a
93 100, and contacted a number of VW/Audi  trans rebuilders as well as a ZF
authorizes rebuilder.  To their credit, not one of them laughed or slammed
the phone down on me.  They won't touch them, period.  No tooling, no
information, no parts, and no interest in doing one.  German Transaxles in
Oregon, a well known rebuilder of VW trannys, said they had made some effort
early on to do these and were met with disaster.  Even servicing them
requires a VAG 1551 or the equivalent.  I won't even service the one in my
own car.  John
