Motor Oil, ATF and a 20v turbo engine

I doubt if it can do any harm even if you left in there for 3k miles. I
had an '81 BMW 528i w/ 180k miles that was burning excessive oil until
my mechanic suggested adding a 1/2 quart of ATF at each oil change.
Worked like a charm. It's no worse than the over-the-counter noisy
lifter quieting agents. Heck, you can even use one of those motor
flushes that you run for 5 minutes. I personally have used one (can't
recall which brand) on my 87 5ktq and had good results. Then again, I'm
beyond the point of pampering my cars.

Listers,
Is it safe to pour some ATF into the crankcase, run it
for about 100 miles and dump the oil and filter? I've
heard here and elsewhere that ATF, due to its high
detergent action, is good for cleaning out gunk in your
engine.

Before I do something stupid, I wanted some more feedback.
:-)

Thanks,
Taka
