Are your trunk/rear lights U/S ?

My fathers '94 Audi 80 tdi trunk light has not worked since he got it a
year ago. Recently the reversing and fog light have stoped working also.
We could live with the first fault but the latter faults meant that it had
to be fixed.
In other words all the light connected with the trunk lid were faulty.
Fault was traced to the cable running up the left side of the trunk where
it bends as the trunk opens and closes. I cut the outer insulation to find
all the cores inside had damaged insulation or had broken completely.
I could not find any 7 core cable of suitable size so bought a reel of
single core cable, cut 7 lengths and covered in self amalgamating tape and
soldered to original wires in trunk and lid. Covered joints with shrink
wrap and more tape. Looks OK honest.
I thought this was a bit of a design fault on Audis part as the cable
bends real tight and is thus liable to mechanical failure. Other
manufacturers have metal pads on the body and spring loaded pins on the
trunk which make contact when trunk is closed (you know what I mean) to
avoid this problem.
Hope this helps someone

Regards

Simon

P.S Father is still delighted with car especially as it does 50 mpg.

P.P.S Converted my Camaro myself to LPG (propane) a while ago does 17 mpg
but as it is half the cost of petrol effectively is doing 34 mpg. Used to
get about 20 on petrol. Performance almost the same.
