How important is the gasket when replacing brake master

There's an O-ring in there, but I don't know what it seals against. There
should not be any brake fluid coming out the back of the master
cylinder. Did you change the gaskets between the reservoir and the master
cylinder? I could see fluid leaking past old, hard gaskets at that
location and running down the bottom of the MC to where it bolts onto the
booster assembly. Was this a NEW master cylinder?
