How important is the gasket when replacing brake master cylinder?

I think it's only for dirt and mostly moisture. That
area "should" be dry. I know it's very hard to tell
the difference sometimes, but if it's Pento., the
front seal of the brake booster is bad, brake fluid
and the rear shaft seal of the master is shot.
