shipping companies - caveat emptor

Hi All,
Don't know who began this thread but I can't resist throwing my .02 in. I
shipped my wife's BMW from Sacramento to Washington, DC a few years back. I
went through all the due diligence I could including recording mileage,
dings, etc. The car was in pristine condition. When we finally got the
shipping company to deliver it from a New Jersey suburb of New York City,
they insisted on off loading it in a local shopping center -- at night. In
the light of the next day the car looked like it had been misused and abused
inside and out and had been driven over 500 miles on the odometer. Anyone's
guess how much it was really driven.
If you can find a nice trustworthy victim to drive it across country, you
are way ahead.
Another alternative is to have it shipped along with your household goods in
the same van if you're moving; that was very common a few years back but
don't know about now. Of course, the movers prep it to make sure it's
"safe" for them to haul.
Good luck!
Cheers!
