1.8 crank pulley alignment ?

I am in the middle of replacing the timing belt in my '87 4000, and I
neglected to notice the alignment of the v-belt pulley on the
crankshaft before I removed it. I need to know which direction the
notch on the edge goes in relation to the bump on the t-belt
sprocket, or TDC, whichever you know. Apparently, this notch must be
aligned with the intermediate shaft sprocket when I put the belt back
on. Not sure why that has to be timed, but I don't want to find out
the hard way.
