Can I eliminate the after run turbo coolant pump?

The crappy expensive plastic turbo pump part broke at the neck of one of
the outlets while I was working under the hood of my 87 5ktq. Has
anyone ever experienced one breaking off while driving?. Man, that
would suck. Anyway, I just connected the 2 hoses w/ a brass fitting
until I can find a reasonable replacement. Can I just eliminate it all
together since I seldom push the car to the point when I'm running hi
boost for an extended period of time. Plus, I would think that the
cooler New England temps would help a bit. I recall a mechanic telling
a friend of mine to ignore it when his pump was failing to kick on after
the car was shut down. It was his opinion that it was over kill
especially in the US where speed limits prevent one from running hi
boost for an extended period (as compared to driving on the Autobahn).
Any thought out there????
