Thanks to all who advised me on the timing belt change on my '87 4000
S. It's back together, and tonight, I adjusted the ignition timing,
and it runs great. Took her for a little test drive up the road.
About a mile down the road, the exhaust system broke just in front of
the cat. Wow, less than two minutes it was fixed and something else
broke. That's amazingly quick! Is this a weak point in older Audi
exhausts? Just after I bought my 200Q, which had been sitting for
months just as the 4000 has, the front pipe rusted off in the exact
same place. The rest of the system is solid, so, like on the 200,
I'll have my favorite muffler shop weld a new end on the front pipe
for about $35.

hey, these old Audis sound pretty good with no exhausts.
