Alternator Woes....

Got an Alternator problem, I'm learning a lot about
them, but I'm a little stuck and I need some help.
Before I start, I have a '87 Audi 4000S.

My alternator doesn't seem to produce the power needed
to keep my battery charged. After reading a little in
my Jetta's Haynes manual (my Audi one is coming in the
mail, and I figured for the alternator they are
similar.) I measured a voltage of 0.67Volts. No
wonder my battery dies. I know I should at least, get
a voltage above 12V. Well, I removed the voltage
regulator assembly from the rear and placed another
one I had from a second alternator. I got the same
voltage reading.

I'm not sure what could be wrong. I was thinking the
problem lies with the reg. But, if the reg was shot,
wouldn't I have too much voltage. I'm not sure what
else to try. What is wrong when your reg produces half
a volt? I've learned that 70 to 80% of alternator
problems are with the reg.

If anyone has any advice. I would like to do some
other tests to figure out what my problem is. I have
a mutlimeter, (I don't have an ammeter greater then
10Amps.)

Also, I want to know what should the coil reading be.

Just to make sure, that it isn't the problem.
(If you could, give me a little detail on how I should
measure this too. I have an idea, but, I want to make
sure I'm doing it correctly)

Oh yeah, any other suggestions would be helpful too.
I could simply go spend the 200 dollars to get a new
one. But, then I wouldn't learn anything, and I'll be
broker then I'm already broke. LOL.

Thanks for the help. :)
