cc probs on '87 5kcstq

Just got a new blower motor and heater coil installed. Just tried it for 
first time, and Auto mode gets "confused": w/A/C on it blows from front 
vents, then switches to defog vents, back and forth. Gizmo (programmer?) 
behind glove box makes noise sometimes too.  Programmer is new, and only 
about 9 mos. old.

What to check?
