5ktq Fuel Pump Relay Question???

Mike - If the car starts after letting it sit for awhile, but does not
start right after it dies, then I would suggest checking the fuel pump
filter (screen) and the main fuel filter. If the fuel pump filter (screen)
is getting
clogged up, then the car will die because it ran out of fuel. After the
car is off for a while, the debris on the filter (screen) loosens, falls
back into
the tank, and again there is a chance of fuel flow. Since the previous
owner did not have this problem, and since the car had set for a while,
residue of the coagulation of old fuel may be what is clogging the fuel
pump filter (screen) in the tank. If you know the car is dying after a set
amount of time (say five minutes of running), then try this test: pull the
fuel pump relay, crank the engine over for about a minute to relieve
pressure in the fuel line, remove the fuel filter, and place the end of the
line in a container, such as a two gallon gas container. Wait about five
minutes (for the fuel pump filter (screen) to clear again, then with the
fuel pump relay still out, apply 12 volts to the lead for the fuel pump
(jack 41 on my 83 5kt relay socket - check your manual), which is best done
with a fused switch held in your hand. Watch the fuel flow in the
container to see if it
starts to lessen or quit in the same amount of time that the engine would
run then die. If this happens, then you are seeing the starvation of the
fuel pump due to a blocked filter (screen) in the tank.
