Radio problems

I have 2 radios out of 5000CD TQ's. Both do not work. The display panel
lights up, but no letters. No sound. 

Is there any place that fixes these things at a reasonable cost? 
Is this a problem with the security system? I heard that VW had a
problem with the security chip that quit after losing power a few times.
Costs almost as much as a new no name radio.
